Claire + Thomas | Engagement | NYC

Claire and Thomas came all the way from France to have an engagement session with me!  Personally I think thats pretty cool:).  Ok, well maybe they had some other minor reason to be in NYC but lets keep the priorities straight:)

Apparently the “engagement shoot” is not something that is common in France but Claire is thinking that after her girlfriends see the photos that might start a new trend:)

For the shoot we spun around most of the landmark spots in New York City.  We started out in DUMBO, hiked across the Brooklyn Bridge, and then after a brief stop at Times Square, walked over to the Grand Central Terminal.  New York City just never fails to provide some great views and backdrops, and having a wonderfully stylish, gorgeous and loving couple made for an incredibly fun time!

Claire & Tom, thank you for allowing me to capture a day in your New York life – one day, we will have to do Part 2, in Paris!!!:) But until that happens… hope you enjoy the photos!

Natalya + Yan | Engagement | Long Island City

Natalya and Yan live Long Island City but they are moving to Boston in the near future (For Yan’s residency ordeal:)) so they wanted to do the shoot in the neighborhood that they love.

We got really lucky with the weather and it was one one of the warmer days in what has been an unusually cold march in NYC.

Vicky and John | Family Portrait

I had a privilege to photograph Vicky’s and John’s wedding in 2011. So I was super excited when I was contacted by Vicky who wanted to me to photograph their family. Her mom and sisters live in Costa Rica and don’t visit nearly as often as she would like so it was a rare opportunity.

Vicky - For many years now I have been wanting to give gifts instead of receiving them for my birthday and I think it is great that in this case I can actually give them something that will last for many years to come.

Thank you so much Alex for capturing such a unique moment in our lives. We were really excited to see the outcome after a freezing NY experience; there is so much warmth in the pictures that it struck me as amazing how comfortable we seem and a lot of it has to do with you and your ways!

My family is so very special to me and now that they are far away I miss them dearly but these photographs are such a beautiful reminder that no matter the distance or circumstances, love will shine through. I was certain and now it is tangible!

Again, thank you for your profesionalism, premium customer service, for your friendship and for dealing with all these women! ;) of course it was the guys that complaint the most…

We are all very grateful!
Big hugs from los ticos,
Vicky

Slim + Hayley | Dancer/Couple Shoot | NYC

Lately I have been fascinated with the use of fabrics in portrait photography. Inspired by photographers like Sue Bryce and Bambi Cantrell whose work I greatly admire I asked Slim and his girlfriend Hayley to model for me.  Both of them are accomplished dancers who have studied and performed at Alvin Alley.

So with that idea in mind I made a trip to the Fashion District in Manhattan to look for fabrics. Sadly enough in the last couple of decades the Fashion district really declined, as more and more companies were forced to close their doors, or to move their production overseas. But despite that, 38th street still has a multitude of stores that sell an astonishing variety of fabrics. It was an eye-opening experience – I would have never been able to visualize such an array of gorgeous colors and textures without visiting the stores:). Since this was my first experiment using fabrics as props I decided to keep things simple and to go with a black and white motif.  I got some stretchy lycra, in both colors that I later had my dry cleaner sew into a tube shape.  Additionally, I purchased some inexpensive white fabric that had a nice texture and sheen to it.  Finally, you will see a really funky fabric that we used as a skirt for Hayley that I just couldn’t resist getting a yard of:).

So the shoot was to provide some couple photos for the guys – for both professional and personal use and to allow me to play and experiment. So here is a mix of dance and more fashion inspired shots that were my favorite from the session. Would love to get any feedback on what you think and any suggestions on what could have been done better.

I can’t wait to get my hands on more fabric, and explore this in my future photoshoots some more, so for those of you out there who have wanted a photography portrait shoot that’s a little less traditional, so to speak – let me know!  I am booking portrait shoots in my Brooklyn studio for several dates in March and April.

Some lessons that I learned during this shoot:

Don’t buy cheap safety pins – they bend and don’t even go through the thick fabric.
If you are playing with the stretch fabrics get them in as light weight as possible and as stretchy as possible – poor Hayley was feeling like she is having a workout while stretching fabric to its maximum:)
