Yuri+Svetlana | NYC Wedding

This was the second wedding I ever went to and the first wedding I photographed!

Yuri is a very good friend of mine and I was one of the guests at the wedding. Since I was shooting the wedding as a guest and was not willing to get in the way of the official photographer – I often could not get the perspective I wanted … Considering the handicap – I think I did very well!!:)

The wedding as you can see was absolutely gorgeous and very well planned and coordinated. I don’t know how the paid photographers felt – but I had a lot of fun.

Michael F & Co – 7 West 47th Street, New York | Diamond & Jewelry Photography

Michael F & Co

7 West 47th Street New York

Photographing diamond jewelry is one of the most frustrating affairs a product photographer goes though.  On one hand you want large, soft and even light for the reflective metal – on the other hand you need a hard, specular highlights to make the diamond come alive, while also introducing dark reflections in the metal to define the shape of the piece.  Most photographers already know how difficult it is to photograph low quality jewelry.  By the way, low quality does not necessary mean cheap, while high quality is not always expensive.

Thankfully, this post is about some of the highest quality jewelry on the market.

Recently, I spent two weeks photographing Michael Fuzaylov’s jewelry in his small, but very impressive store in the heart of New York’s Diamond District.  The shoot was for Michael’s forthcoming website, expected to go live at the end of this month (www.michaelfdiamonds.com).

As a photographer, I am privy to a unique perspective on jewelry – I end up seeing the work at high magnification. It often looks very different than to the casual, naked eye. Michael F & Co. jewelry boasts some of the cleanest lines and detail normally only found in the best jewelry from stores like Tiffany’s and Cartier.

When I saw the quality of Michael F&Co jewelry I really wanted to do something unique, something that would display the jewelry to its best advantage. I spent half the night prior to my first day at Michael’s experimenting with different photo ideas at home – to the exasperation of my wife, who was required to give her female input. After all, there must be a reason why diamonds are called “a girl’s best friend:).”

I am glad that Michael agreed to the idea I proposed and hope you will like it as well – As always I would appreciate any comments and critique – especially if you happen to be another jewelry photographer…

Jerome Lowenthal – Portrait of a Great American Pianist

Jerry is an internationally-renowned pianist and has been a member of the esteemed faculty at The Juilliard School since 1991. This shoot occurred at the end of the recoding session of the second disc of Liszt’s Années de pèlerinage (Years of Pilgrimage) which is  a set of three suites for solo piano.

Personally it was really interesting for me to attend the session, as I have never seen a professional recording session before. It was truly inspiring to see the process and hear Jerry’s performance – “Years of Pilgrimage” is a masterwork of the piano repertoire, and something that even a much younger pianist would have to work very hard to perform. Jerry at 78 performed without a single complaint and only took breaks when he was forced to do it:)

The shoot itself was a challenge for couple of reasons:

We did not have a lot of time due to very high hourly rental fees of the concert hall where Jerry was recording this disc.

We were limited to using only flash strobes since the Hall did not allow us to turn-on any stage lights. As I new the time was limited, I only brought 2 lights with softboxes – to save time on the setup and break down. Pianists can be very annoying by wanting to have their beloved instrument in the shot:) - but that instrument happens to be 6 to 9 feet long and is not something that you can easily bring to the location of your choice, and is a challenge to paint with light so that the shot ends up worthy of a CD cover or a poster…

The CDs are being released by Bridge Records in the upcoming months

I would higly appreciate any comments and suggestions…

Nodari Revia | Metropolitan 2010 Bodybuilding Competition

First I would like to say that competitive bodybuilding is the most masochistic sport I know of:)

This post is completely and totally dedicated to my best friend Nodari Revia:)
Nodar took 3rd place in the men’s open heavyweight division… – CONGRATULATIONS:):):):)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Even though I have partial coverage of the whole event – I was there mostly to provide moral support and photograph Nodar.
So I am only posting pictures that involve him… and one other that to me is in the “… priceless” category:)
The competition is divided into 2 parts: Morning pre-judging and qualification and Evening main event.

Morning – sign-in

The delightfully orange person is Nodar – the huge dude in the white t-shirt is his occasional trainer Paul

Getting Weighted…

Nodar managed to place into Heavyweight category – he made it in by only 2 pounds – which completely freaked him out as that meant he would be the lightest guy in his category. On the morning of competition he weighted 201 (keep in mind that his normal weight is around 225 – which should tell you how much effort goes into dieting and pre-competition dehydration that all of those  guys went through)

Morning Pre-Judging

Main Evening event

Award ceremony:)

And for the final photo:

Bikini – 200 dollars
Tanning Oil – 20 dollars
Hair & make-up – 100 dollars
Having two guys stare at your ass while they are oiling you – PRICELESS:)

Nodari - Thank you, Alex. Incredible pictures! Amazing quality! You captured me in a very flattering way considering the fact that I managed to lose some definition till the evening show :)

Tati - Great job, Alex and Nodari! Congrats and my best wishes to both:)

Vassily Primakov

Vassily is a brilliant classical pianist and one of our best family friends…

He has several new CDs coming out within the next 6 months and when he asked me for a photo shoot to produce the covers of those CDs – it was both a pleasure and a privilege:)

The shoot consisted of 2 parts:

Part one – more casual – in a natural light – images mostly meant for headshots and for the back of the CD jacket…

Part 2 – formal session for the front of the CD cover… Since we wanted him with a piano in the shot we shot the second part in his home which involved some very creative use of space – as let me tell you, it is not easy to fit even 1 light with a large softbox in a Manhattan living room that contains 2 grand pianos:)

Louis Newton - Very beautiful photographs (with a sweet touch of whimsey here and there) of a wonderful pianist. Thank you for sharing them.
